Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System for the First Time.
The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes will gain the option to contest particular decisions from the official, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
